Catherine Wheel GateThe picture of St Augustine’s Gate (left) in the old city wall was painted in 1791. You can see The Catherine Wheel on the right of the picture,

We know this has been The Catherine Wheel since at least 1740 when records of licensees began, and the first one are was Edmund Lockett. We were probably one of the oldest surviving pubs in Norwich now, and proud to be the custodians of this wonderful piece of history, especially as the name has not been changed.

It is thought that when the farmers brought their cattle through the gate to market, they would have stopped here for ale, and to water the animals from the well.

We thank you for supporting this pub and it’s rich and varied history, and hope you enjoy the knowledge that every drink or meal you buy helps us to preserve

The Catherine Wheel
the fun, friendly and fabulous pub
